We've Tuned Up Yet Again

Last Summer, I moved The Den of Amateur Writing from a sluggish server to one with a lot more speed. While that should have made the page respond a lot faster to requests, it didn't. Why? Well we were still running PHP-Fusion, which didn't do any page caching. That was fixed shortly thereafter when the site was moved from PHP-Fusion to it's new Drupal 7 powerhouse. Pages were cached and searches were indexed to create a faster response time with less PHP overhead. That should have been all we needed.

And Now For A New Way To See What's Going On...

I've been wanting to implement something like this for a while now and finally it's here. When you go to The Den today you'll be able to see a new option in the main menu under 'The Community' called 'Recent Activity'. This will take you to a list of all activity on The Den. This list includes new submissions, commenting, and new users joining the site.

Twitter and Facebook Feeds Improved

The Twitter and Facebook feeds recieved an overhaul today as I changed the service that I use to push the sites RSS data to the two social networks. By switching to Twitterfeed.com as an intermediary party the presentation and readability of the output on both .NET and .ORG has improved significantly. I hope users enjoy the new look.

I also apologize as the two social network feeds may have been spamming your feed for a bit as I tested changes.  This could not be avoided, however I removed the excess posts as soon as I could. Thank you for your patience.

Staff Needed

The last year has seen us lose a few staff members for varying reasons, and as a result the remaining staff members are stretched thin on their available time. Since the population of the site is only continuing to grow, this means we need to find more people willing to contribute their time to The Den.

Happy 15th to The Den!

Someone just informed me that it was March break already, and I was shocked to find this out. I've been so busy with life lately I almost forgot that The Den was about to pass the 15th year mark since it's conception. Time flies when you're having fun, then again, it flies when you're just living life as well.

Long Overdue Updates Completed

I have finally gotten a chance to update the Drupal 7 core and many of the plugins that The Den uses on both the .ORG and .NET sites. This was over six months overdue as I haven't had my coding system available to me for some time. Everything is back up and running, however some changes may be noticed. Not all of the plugins stored their settings during the update. Most notably, the sharing buttons have lost their settings and are in odd locations on writings or not showing up at all. These are things I must fix over the coming week.

Changing of The Guard

It always saddens me to bid a member of the administration staff adieu, however the time comes every now and again for various reasons. In this case the reason is a positive one, but I take no delight in it none-the-less. Kerri-Emmitt has been an administrator with us for two years now, and has started work on an undergraduate degree. Earning a distinction in university takes a lot of hard work and time, and Kerri has decided to relinquish her role as an administrator as a result.

November / December 2011 contest winner

It's a dog-eat-cat world out there, as it should be. And it seems that in this battle, there wasn't room for birds or snakes. All four entries were stellar, so let's review. There was bad formatting all around, the smell of it filled the battlefield. In Vermithrax's nuclear tale, as well as in DesertRat's own littlest Hobo, we had felines that deserved a kick in the rump and a boot to the road. They could have been more evil, though, as cats are famous for. Things got a little feisty on Billy Mundane's Finicky, and lions were declawed.

September / October 2011 Contest Results

Three outstanding entries from three members: one old, two relatively new. It was good and close reading these thrilling entries and I had to get a second opinion to find the ultimate winner.

.NET Back to Normal Operation

The Den of Amateur Writing's community site has been brought back to normal operation as of this morning at 9:00 AM. I apologize for the long delay and the confusion of having it half back last night. Everyone's work should be intact and all site functions have been brought back to normal. If you have any problems, please go the the .ORG site and comment on this article.
